I was born in Colwyn Bay in 1956. My art training consisted of a Foundation year at N.E.W.I. Wrexham, several years of life drawing classes, and finally four years with the Open College which I completed in 1993. I became a full Academician of the Royal Cambrian Academy in the spring of 1996. Later that year I concentrated full time on my painting.
I work entirely out of doors. I find this the most stimulating way of painting, and essential to my creative expression. John Constable said that painting was another word for feeling, and that he should paint his own native scenery best. Although Art is essentially derived from Art, and not just from inspiration to a subject; nevertheless the emotional response I have to my own native land is fundamental to my creative process. Simply, if I did not love the landscape I could not paint it.
"David has a subject he must paint and is the proverbial indigenous practitioner, with a landscape all of his own, steeped in longing and belonging, seasoned by time and temperament. His is a vision caught in the dynamic moment of innocent compulsion. David embraces his experience as part of the inclusive premise of the arts - it is what we have in common that matters - and the sharing elevates our sense of mystery. He has inherited a kindred space where art and nature co-exist."
